Our Sheltered Housing Schemes
Our sheltered accommodation schemes consist of complexes of one-bedroom flats and studio flats across the city of Southend and are usually occupied by people aged 60 and over.
These schemes are managed and maintained by South Essex Homes on behalf of Southend-on-Sea City Council.
‘Part 2’ Sheltered Schemes
The eligibility for these units is that the occupant must be aged over 60. There are 988 units of ‘Part 2’ housing based at 20 sites across the city. These units have access to the following:
- A personal alarm system linked to Careline
- Secure entry system
- Communal lounge
- Housing advice and support from South Essex Homes' Housing Support team

‘Part 1’ Sheltered Schemes
The eligibility for these units is that the occupant must be aged over 50. There are 474 units of ‘Part 1’ housing based at 14 sites across the city.

Extra Care Schemes
The eligibility for these units is that the occupant must be in receipt of some form of disability allowance. There are 30 units of extra care housing - 15 units at Westwood in Eastwood Old Road, Leigh on Sea and 15 units at Longmans in Rampart Street, Shoeburyness. These units have access to the following:
- Personal care (provided 24 hours a day, 7 days per week)
- A personal alarm system linked to the on-site care provider
- Secure entry system
- Communal lounge
